Dubai, United Arab Emirates
October 10, 2014
Smack dab in the center of the Middle East, Dubai, United Arab Emirates is one of the safest and most prosperous places on earth. We chose to fly Emirates Airlines for our flights from Istanbul to Nairobi and from Cape Town to Bangkok for a couple of reasons. Firstly, they were competitively priced with Qatar Airways and Etihad; and secondly, it would take us to Dubai, a place we’ve always wanted to visit. I’ve always had a thing for flying and getting the chance to fly the Airbus A380 was an added bonus. However, unless you are fortunate enough to sit on the second deck (Business and First classes), it’s just like any other Emirates flight. Having said that, ‘any other Emirates flight’ is no ordinary flight, especially by North American standards. We’ve flown a lot and flying Emirates truly is an experience in itself.
Makarska, Croatia – September 23 – October 1, 2014
After leaving the tourist mecca that is Dubrovnik, we were looking for something low-key, budget-friendly and warm-weathery. Turns out Makarska was the right choice as the tourist season was just about over, our apartment cost $30/night and it was sunny and 25 degrees.
Salzburg (& Vienna), Austria – October 4 – 10, 2014
The Eurolines bus ride from Sarajevo to Vienna was, well, long. I’m not really sure how else to describe it. It was about 13 hours and six border checkpoints. However, 13 hours doesn’t feel as long when it takes you through four countries and you can watch the gradual shift in landscape, society and culture as you travel northwest through Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and into Austria.
Dubrovnik, Croatia – September 20 – 23, 2014
Dubrovnik is likely the most popular tourist destination in Croatia and after spending a couple of days in the area, it is easy to see why. Dubrovnik and its walled Old City is spectacular, perched on the Adriatic Sea with Srd Mountain providing a backdrop. It is a popular destination for Mediterranean cruises so when that ship docks, you can expect an influx of thousands of tourists!
Apologies for the short hiatus from our blog! It was for good reason, as we spent nearly a month camping in Africa where WIFI is not a priority. We started in Kenya and visited Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia before spending a few days in Cape Town. We will be posting about this amazing adventure, but first to catch up on a few short stops we made before making our way to Africa!
Venice, Italy – September 17 – 19, 2014 Jess and I had made the decision in August to remove Italy from our RTW plans and save it for a future trip. We felt that Italy deserved a proper visit and that to truly experience it, we would need at least couple of weeks and a little more spending money. Plus, like most of Europe, Italy is pretty accessible from Canada so we are confident we’ll be back in the not so distant future.

Welcome to our blog! We are Steven and Jess, a young (ish) Canadian couple from Newfoundland, Canada.
