With 2015 just around the corner, we thought we’d put together our highlights from 2014, and share some of our plans for 2015!
When we rang in NYE 2013 in Sydney, Australia last year, we hadn’t the faintest idea what 2014 would have in store for us. We thought we’d be coming back to our Canadian winter, maybe plan a vacation somewhere throughout the year, make our annual summer visit home to Newfoundland, and ring in NYE 2014 like we have in previous years, again at home in Newfoundland (which we hope to do next year).

December 2013: Ringing in New Year’s Eve 2013 in Sydney, Australia

November 2 – 6, 2014
After 20 days of camping through east Africa, we were looking forward to staying put in one place for a few days, sleeping in, and enjoying some comfort food. I had been craving a big greasy burger and fries and Jessica was looking for the best gluten-free pizza. Plus, we would be in Cape Town, one of the most stunning cities on the planet!

20-day Nairobi to Livingstone with G Adventures
We’ve always wanted to take an African adventure and given we had just received approval for a one-year leave of absence from work, this was the perfect opportunity. Deciding to GO was one major decision down. Who to go WITH was a much tougher decision and unfortunately, we were unable to find an abundance of resources online to help! We are hoping that this review will help those who find themselves trying to decide which company to go with. In the end we chose G Adventures and couldn’t be happier with our decision. (Note: all points made below are based on the experience of finelinetravels only).

Gansbaai, South Africa
SHARK DIVING SEASON
On November 5th, we took to the waters off Gansbaai to get friendly with some great white sharks. We did some research about the best time to go and apparently we were going outside the high season, which meant the odds of us seeing sharks were slightly lower. Luckily, it also meant we had no trouble booking just two days in advance.

When crossing borders overland in Africa, it is critical that you have your documents in order. G Adventures lists all requirements on its website, so be sure to give it a read before joining the tour. We were delayed a couple of hours at the border because some members of the group were missing vaccination certificates.
